an 'alternative twist' on an Australian icon

A simple design with an immensely effective result that ticked all the boxes of this customer’s desires. A true testament to JB Construction Services P/L‘s beliefs that attest to form and function’s equal significance within the architectural field and the favourable outcome the two can deliver when used in an adequately balanced ratio.

Melbourne like most parts of our fair nation experiences a warm climate most of the year round, thus the use of the outdoor space has worked its way into its Australian lifestyle. Since the earliest of settlements Australians have learned to utilise verandas and pergolas for far more than just their sun screening capabilities. From the occasional party, to the weekend gatherings, and daily meal times, these naturally ventilated areas have become an immensely important part of the Australian way of life. With centuries passing from their early introduction, the art and craft involved in designing as well as incorporating these outdoor areas into our homes has become quite a respectful field in its own. With the industry experts pushing the boundaries and handling more demanding jobs, the average consumer looking for something a little more than your off-the-shelf pergola, yet nothing that mimics the outdoors of a high class resort, has been left without an option.

Well, the jbcs team are here to assure you that we can help. We do consider ourselves innovators in the field, but we don’t associate innovation with excessiveness and like to refrain from overindulging in ineffective additions that are often seen featured today. If a simple solution with a few accents is all that your back-yard requires then this is where we will draw the line. And that was exactly what this particular customer was looking for. Not an outdoor package featuring decks, ponds and screens littering the views of his beloved back-yard, but a pergola that followed a simpler brief:

  • a sheltered area that provided protection from undesirable weather conditions without creating a space that felt detached from the outdoors;
  • a design that complemented the residence’s features without mimicking its bulky nature;
  • a pergola that doubled as a water collection unit for the water-tanks located at the back of the residence;
  • and a project that fit within the scope of the set budget.

With the budget being quite tight, minimising material use without compromising structural rigidity was one of the key objectives that played a major role in the design stages. The solution adopted the use of Prodeck roofing sheets for their ability to:

  • span the required distances without the need for supporting structural members;
  • their high rib formations which adhered to Australian Building Code for low pitched roofs (1 deg minimum);
  • as well as their range that featured galvanised as well as opaque fibreglass finishes that didn’t only work well with the existing counterparts, but also insured an uninterrupted and seamless finish.

In order to further integrate the selected materials into the project the following design provisions were made:

  • the roof line was raised above the standard height practiced in order to give the pergola an airy and open feel that allowed in ample amounts of light;
  • a screen was added in order to bring the unorthodox height level down without restricting daylight nor adding excess bulk;
  • a contrasting fire-red colour was introduced to the gutters as well as the featured screens to add character to the relatively bland and dreary rear-walls;
  • Prodeck opal opaque roofing sheets were positioned over window and door openings to make provisions for natural light.

All of the design aspects mentioned above were then drafted up and presented to the customer in the form of the following 3D CAD rendered images.

The design was accepted! In fact the customer was so impressed with the proposal that the contract was signed the very same day with on-site works scheduled to commence within a week from the date.
